Xinda XDT60 Portable Boring Machine: Restore φ65–500 mm Articulated Hole Groups to Round in a Single On-Site Pass

Excavator boom/arm pin holes, loader bucket hinge points, crane shaft-pin holes, articulated holes on small/medium mining trucks, marine deck-crane hinges, hatch-cover roller pin holes, piping support holes — these jobs share a common pattern: the holes are not especially large, but they often appear in groups, and removing them for shop work is uneconomical. A single out-of-round hole can sometimes be patched by changing the pin, but when three holes line up and coaxiality is required, sending even one part to the shop means the whole machine stops. The value of the Xinda XDT60 portable boring machine — hydraulic version bores φ65–500 mm, φ60 mm bar, 700 mm feed, 3 mm single-side depth of cut, roundness 0.03 mm, Ra 3.2; electric / worm-gear / bore-weld sub-models to be confirmed by configuration — is that it turns “medium hole groups” into an on-site method with in-situ centering and coaxial symmetry. This article looks at it from the angle of multi-hole coaxiality and downtime.

I. Why medium hole groups suit the XDT60 rather than a smaller/larger machine

Xinda portable boring machines are segmented by bore size, and the XDT60 occupies a clear position:

  • XDT40 / XDT50: small-bore segment, suited to φ45–200 and φ55–260 single holes or small hinge points; preferred when the hole count is low and the build-up weld volume is small.

  • XDT60: the main machine for medium bores φ65–500 mm. It covers excavator arm holes φ80–300, loader bucket hinges, crane shaft pins, small/medium mining-truck articulation points, and marine pipe flanges/roller pins up to φ500.

  • XDT90: heavy long-bar segment φ95–800 mm; better for large-bore, long-span work such as mining-truck rear axles, electric-shovel crowd arms, and marine rudder systems.

Selection rule: if the holes to be repaired are φ65–500 and usually “2–3 in-line articulated holes requiring coaxiality” → evaluate the XDT60; single hole with slight wear → look at XDT40/50; hole spacing beyond ~2 m and grouped large holes above φ300 → evaluate the XDT90.

II. The core of in-line multi-hole work is not “can bore”, but “center once”

XDT60 application coverage includes rotary holes, hinge holes and shaft-pin holes on large structures in construction machinery and ships — post-build-up welding machining or boring followed by bush installation; concentric-hole repair; and in-line multi-hole machining with one-time positioning to guarantee coaxiality.

The field method breaks into five steps:

  1. Clean holes and set datum: remove rust scale, residual old bush material, weld slag and oil sludge down to the original arc. For multiple holes, measure max/min diameter of each, determine the direction of out-of-roundness and the stock distribution.

  2. Select taper sleeves / centering devices by bore: the XDT60 hydraulic version is supplied with a set of centering devices, graded to actual bore sizes — do not force an approximate size.

  3. Run the φ60 bar through the hole group: standard φ60 × 2 m bar; if hole spacing exceeds the standard bar, confirm an extended bar. After threading, support at both ends / multiple points — do not rely on a single cantilever.

  4. Lock the support bases: the hydraulic version is supplied with 2 supports and 8 support bolts; for multiple holes or long spans add auxiliary supports. Fixing method follows workpiece material, mating-face condition and the manufacturer’s process; if welding is used for fixation, watch for thermal deformation affecting the datum.

  5. Rough then finish separately: rough all holes first leaving allowance, then finish all in one pass. Completing the group on the same bar and same datum avoids cumulative error from re-aligning each hole individually.

III. Hydraulic version for site conditions: no three-phase power, field or underground

The XDT60 is offered in plain electric, worm-gear electric and hydraulic sub-types, selected by site conditions:

  • Plain electric / worm-gear electric: repair sheds, workshops, site areas with power. Worm-gear feed is easier on the operator; suitable for single-shift continuous multi-hole work with lower effort.

  • Hydraulic version: 15 kW power pack, hydraulic-motor drive, stepless speed with forward/reverse. Best where stable 380 V is unavailable, where underground work requires flameproof/explosion-protected electrical equipment, or where the site can tap an excavator/concrete-pump hydraulic source — fewer cables, stable torque.

  • Bore-weld combo (separate sub-type): 3.8 kW servo, 0–300 r/min, 500 mm stroke (customizable), single-pass weld build-up 4–5 mm, weld/bore φ50–500 mm. After build-up it switches to the boring bar for finish machining — suited to holes worn to local defects where material must first be deposited and then bored.

IV. Downtime accounting for “remove less, stop less” on medium holes

A traditional remove-and-send job usually runs: pull pins → remove lugs/brackets → lift → transport → queue in the machining shop → reassemble → re-pin. For a medium articulated group requiring three coaxial holes, rework on any one hole can stop the whole line.

What the XDT60 on-site method compresses:

  • No major disassembly: the workpiece stays put, the bar passes through the hole group, support bases anchor to the workpiece itself — no lifting/transport.

  • No re-positioning: multi-hole centered once, rough and finish on the same bar — no per-hole alignment.

  • Welding without changing machines (bore-weld version): weld build-up on the weld bar → switch to the boring bar for finishing, same datum — no separate welding contractor plus a second boring-machine call-out.

  • No waiting for power (hydraulic): on field repair yards without stable mains, the power pack is self-driven or connected to the site hydraulic source, reducing delays caused by power supply.

Choosing the XDT60 for medium articulated hole groups is not simply “buying a portable machine that can bore φ500”; it is establishing an in-situ coaxial method for pin holes of φ65–500 that usually appear in groups — φ60 bar through the group, centering device for initial alignment, dual/auxiliary supports to lock the datum, hydraulic/electric/bore-weld sub-type by site, and rough+finish on one bar. Roundness 0.03 / Ra 3.2 are reference machine capabilities. First fix five things — how many holes, what diameter, what distance, whether build-up welding is needed, and what power is available — then assign the XDT60; this removes fewer parts and causes less standby downtime than merely asking “how big can it bore.”
